All manner of scifi/fantasy/nerdness: Roleplaying, comic books, .... okay, so mainly just RPGs & comic books. And Dr. Who. And Firefly. And comic books. And role-playing games. And Community. And Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And comic books. And RPGs. And Avengers. And RPGS. And whatever else amuses me today...

The “Nerd Girls” tag makes me sad

I’m not going to go on a slut-shaming rant here or gripe about cosplayers, because that’s uncalled for and not the point.

I am going to say that it seems unnecessarily hyper-sexualized and almost one-dimensional.  I feel like there should be some “reclaiming the nerd girls tag” movement to bring some more balance to it.

Thoughts?

…whoa, I saw that tag like… now, for the first time. ò_ò Pretty sad.

I mean, everyone has the right to do (and photograph) whatever he or she likes, but I think I’m pretty nerdy and… I don’t look like that… or dress like that… or anything like that…

I don’t know, maybe I’m… prude? Am I? I don’t know, I’m confused now. O_o

Well now I’m sad I brought it up.  I definitely didn’t want to bother the awesome nerd girls I know.  I guess what I’m really wondering is how to “correct” this.  The “geek girls” tag isn’t much better.

Should everything I tag with “nerd” or “nerd culture” or “nerd world problems” also be tagged with “nerd girls?”

Should the tag be used strictly for discussions on how nerd culture effects girls?

Mainly I just want to start tagging things “nerd girls,” but not sure what to tag with it.  Besides this conversation.

So basically: the girls called “fake” geek girls are actually faking being called “fake” because some girl who isn’t “fake” isn’t called “fake” and is therefore authoritative enough to call “fake” geek girls fake “fake” geek girls, because the only geek girls really called being “fake” are fake “fake” geek girls.

Today is the 23rd anniversary of the death of Jim Henson.  It makes me sad that there are so many people on Tumblr that only know about him in a historical sense, but if you’ve ever enjoyed The Muppets, Sesame Street, Dark Crystal or Labyrinth, here’s a tribute to the joy and hope he brought to the world.qw

Organizing a lock-in at my church

As I was asking the teenagers what sort of things they wanted to do, or what games they wanted to play, a bunch of them asked me if I would run a roleplaying game that night.

So now I have to decide on what systems to use and build some age-appropriate one-shots for church kids who may or may not have ever played an RPG before.  Yay?

#even distribution of men and women #even #distribution #of #men #and #women

Even distribution of men and women: not surprising for a Joss Whedon show. Disappointing though that he STILL hasn’t learned to just. fucking. cast. POC!
Oh wait, there’s one Asian woman. I… guess that counts?
Listen Whedon, you’re basically my hero. I worship the ground you walk on. But this whole “all of my casts are predominantly white” thing needs to stop. It’s just getting embarrassing for a progressive awesome person like you. K?

Also, they’re almost all children.  Unless this is “Spy High,” Agent Coulson could use some other adult chaperones on this class trip.

I swear if there was a black person everyone would be all “zomg token blak person u r racist just cast people based off ability zomg.”
You know I’m right.

Um no, no I don’t.
I do know that when people are tokenized, minimized, ostracized, and left unrepresented in the hobbies I enjoy, they are less likely to enjoy or engage in those hobbies.
I also know that when people who DO enjoy those hobbies act hostile to letting new people in or being represented, it also makes new people less likely to enjoy or engage in those hobbies.
And both of those things make me sad.

I have yet to hear anyone give me legit reasons why 3.5e is superior to 4e.

It’s all complaining and I get the feeling it’s just a “that’s what I started with” nostalgia.

I can explain pretty well why I don’t like 4th Edition.  (This is coming from somebody who has never played straight 3.5, by the way.  I’ve played Star Wars d20, which was based on 3.5, but it’s not strictly the same thing).

I feel like the “Powers” system, with their Encounter/Daily/etc timers, mimcs an MMORPG structure more than what I enjoy a pen-and-paper game.  The shrunken “skills” list gave up many non-combat abilities in exchange for the Powers, which are all entirely combat-oriented.  I found it practically impossible to play 4th Ed without a battle mat & some sort of figurines, which was a first for me.  Matters of range, body positioning, terrain, etc were no longer flavor or descriptions, but details which must be carefully depicted, recorded, and kept track of.

When I play PnP RPGs, my focus is mainly on cooperative storytelling, so player interaction and socialization is key.  There are no Powers that impact this at all.  4th Ed. felt much more like miniature/wargaming than PnP roleplaying/storytelling.

That’s what I don’t like about d&d 4th Ed.  You’re welcome to like it, and I’m not criticizing you for liking it.  That’s just why me and my friends quit playing it after about a year.

Okay, so here’s my awful fanvid for Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  It is overly dramatic and angsty and I made it 10 years ago when I was still bummed about Buffy leaving the WB for UPN, knowing that meant no more Buffy/Angel crossovers.

To the anon that put a movie suggestion in my box:

THANK YOU!

I <3 things in my askbox.

However, if you want me to reply to then publicly on my blog, please keep the language PG.

Whelp, we’re almost there

we’ve just almost done it.

I’m about 25 people away from having more followers on Tumblr than I have friends on Facebook.  If/when I happen to pass that mark, I think I’m going to make a bunch of TMI personal posts to weed out some followers. I shouldn’t be this popular.

Also, I’m getting close to that 2000th post, at which point I’ll post my Marvel comics alignment poster.
